You know what's always bothered me
Since I was six or seven?
The way folks seem to just assume
That there's no laughter up in Heaven!

It's pictured as such a solemn place
Where you'd be scared to even smile!
All trumpets, halos, harps and clouds
But I think they've missed it by a mile!

I like my version better
It has an angel with a grin
Meeting new souls at the Gate
Saying, "Welcome!  Come on in !

"Look around...enjoy yourself
Need something?   Simply ask…
All pain and earthly suffering
Are forever in the past!!"

And the image of God the Father?
A stern Old Man gripping His throne?
Damning sinners to Hell forevermore?
Well, I'd as soon leave that  alone!

Hollywood's stepped up to the plate
Morgan Freeman passed every test
HIs "God" in Bruce Almighty?
Is the one that I love the best!!

And what about OH GOD’S George Burns?
I'm not certain about that cigar...
But his wit and kindliness fit the Lord
Much better, I'm sure by far

And for those convinced God never laughs?
Come out from behind that church steeple!!
Take yourself down to any Walmart
Then just stand there and look at the people!

We quarrel like spoiled children
We have hypocrites, clowns and snitches
Why there's enough comedy here on Earth
To keep every one of the Angels in stitches!!

And Jesus said sin could jeopardize
Our future...if not destroy it...
He
also said this life’s a GIFT!!
And he NEVER said, "Don't enjoy it!"

I think that all the predictions
And descriptions of my childhood
About a furious God and his terrible wrath
Are overstated and misunderstood!

The Father that this poet worships?
The One I pray to whenever I kneel?
Is forgiving and gentle and patient with me
And His love is all that I feel...

So don't let  visions of vengeful God
Keep you cowering daily in fear
The Good Lord knows better than anyone else
That there is no PERFECTION down here!!

He doesn't demand that we make no mistakes
Or forbid us to ever ask "why?"
What He does ask us for is our love and trust
Oh, and of course, that we try!

And those who live life doing their best
And love Him despite tribulations?
Will spark a Heavenly, triumphant hoe-down
Complete with fiddles and loud celebration!

So don't buy into the terror routine
God gave us all freedom of choice!
If your choice is Jesus and you do your best?
You'll have Eternity in which to rejoice!
HEAVENLY HUMOR
