MRS. MITCHELL...PAGE 1 TRUE STORY, BELIEVE IT
OR NOT....HAPPENED TO ME IN BOSTON OVER 30 YEARS AGO....I'VE
NEVER FORGOTTEN THAT SUMMER AND IT'S BECOME THE
PHILOSOPHY ON WHICH I'VE BASED MY LIFE....SO CHEERS TO MRS.
MITCHELL!!      ENJOY....

The tale I'm about to tell
Some may not believe is true
I can only say what happened
What you think is up to you!
But read this with an open mind
Even though you were not there
And if you choose to disbelieve
I really do not care...

It started many years ago
When I was just nineteen
I left my home in the Berkshire Hills
With little else but hopes & dreams
I hitchhiked as far as Boston
Then sought out a place to stay
Before leaving I had discovered
That I was in a "family" way!

I met an older gentleman
Who owned a repair shop
He offered to let me sleep in back
For as long as I cared to stop
When my pregnancy became obvious
He begged me to go home
Saying I couldn't raise a baby
On the streets of Boston all alone!

But going home was not an option
Though I knew that he meant well
Returning unwed with a baby
Would make my life a living hell!
I told him not to worry
That things would work out fine
My kind friend only shook his head
As if to say "You've lost your mind!"

The winter melted into spring
I was due in mid-July
Without the old man's charity
I knew I'd have surely died...
I spent my days walking up & down
A row of department stores
Window-shopping for baby things
There was no way I could afford

As the summer started in
It grew more difficult to walk
My belly, by this time, was huge
And my complexion resembled chalk!
One day while sitting on a bench
Across from the Woolworth store
An elderly lady sat down beside me
I'd seen her once or twice before

Always near this very spot
With her blue & white pillbox hat
Perched smartly on a snow-white bun
She wore a polka-dot dress to match!
Though her face was lined with wrinkles
Her eyes sparkled---the brightest blue!
She eyed my belly knowingly,
Saying, "Gracious!!  Look at you!"

"Hard to miss" I wryly said
She asked,"Did your young man prove
fickle?"
"That's one way to put it" I replied
"I'm on my own and in a pickle!"
Nodding thoughtfully she then said,
"Yes,  I can see that's true!
I've seen you walking now for months!"
She winked, "I've been watching you!"
