THE BENCH...PG 2

“My name is Rachel” said the girl
“May I ask what is yours?”
The other smiled, “It’s Agnes…
I’m on my way home from the store!”

Then Rachel spied the groceries
Bagged at the woman’s feet
“Do you live near here?”  she asked
Agnes nodded, “Just down the street!

But I always stop and sit awhile
To rest these weary bones
For I’m 82 years old you see
And still able to hold my own!”

Rachel grinned, “I’m twenty-one
As well as six months wed!”
”Well, congratulations, sweetie!”
Her new friend quickly said!

Rachel snorted, “I think not!
For I married a spoiled brat!”
With eyes atwinkle, Agnes laughed
“I’m afraid most men are that!

But I’ve been married quite a while
And I’ve learned a thing or two
About handling husbands….if you like
I could share a bit with you !”

Rachel begged, “I’d love to hear
For at this rate it won’t be long
Before I’m convinced this whole marriage thing
Was hasty and very wrong!”

Agnes clucked in sympathy,
“Men do cause many tears…
I should know, I’ve been a Mrs. Now
For almost sixty years!”

Rachel’s mouth fell open…”WOW!”
He must be quite a man!!”
The old lady chuckled, “He was back when
He first asked Daddy for my hand!

I thought he was magnificent
And as handsome as could be
Even though at 18, I couldn’t figure out
What on earth he saw in me!

But he was considered quite a catch
My family was delighted
I started married life much like you…
In love and most excited ! "

Agnes paused and seemed to be
Lost in a far off distant past….
Rachel wondered what it took
For marriage to really last!
