Ever notice how the simplest thing Can sometimes have the most impact? Like when a kind word of encouragement Helps to keep someone on track? I heard a marvelous story About a teacher's idea for her class That spread just like a wildfire And burned as bright and just as fast! This teacher bought a box of ribbons All colored a brilliant blue And declared each one a special badge That said, 'I appreciate you!' One by one she "pinned" her students Telling each that 'who they were' Had made a difference in her life And how special they'd become to her! Then she handed out extra ribbons And challenged them, every one To find another person they could 'pin' The same way she had done... The class was quite excited And they went about their day Searching for that special someone Planning just what they would say! One boy named Jeff went off at lunch To a building down the street Where a junior executive had mentored him Two times a week they'd meet Jeff awarded him the ribbon Saying, "You have changed my life this year By helping me to analyze Both my college and career" Then he handed the young businessman An extra ribbon of his own Telling him he had to 'pass it on' Today before heading home... As he walked back to his office The young man was deep in thought Whoever would benefit the most he wondered Was the person that he sought! Now this young man's boss was quite a grouch A awful, evil-tempered man He never smiled and ruled the office With a heavy, iron hand His angry tirades were a legend His attitude was always sour Constantly belittling everyone Who was trapped beneath his power The young man somehow suddenly knew That this was meant to be He knocked twice, then walked right in As his boss looked up to see His protege with a beaming smile Advancing to his desk And leaning forward to pin a ribbon Of shiny blue right on his chest!! |
