Many, many years ago In a forest far away Three trees stood on a hillside Where breezes made them sway As they grew and time passed by They talked among themselves Unheard except for fairies And mischievous woodland elves They spoke together of their dreams About what they one day hoped to see For each had a different vision Of what their end result would be The first tree said, “I hope my wood Will be a beautiful treasure chest A magnificent container One to outshine all the rest! With polished planks and inlaid jewels Fitted with hinges of solid brass It will hold the greatest treasure Of today and ages past” The second tree said “I’ll become The mightiest ship upon the sea An ocean liner to ride the waves With an awesome majesty! I’ll cross the fiercest currents And fill those who watch with awe I’ll be the greatest vessel ever built The finest anyone ever saw!” The third tree laughed at his companions Saying, “Such dreams can never be They’re too far-fetched and grandiose For something simple as a tree! I wish to be just what I am A tree yes…but something more I’ll grow to be the tallest tree Ever seen on the forest floor! I want to tower over all the rest To be seen both far and wide I’ll be both a landmark and a beacon One even Nature cannot hide!” So the years went by until the day Woodcutters entered the forest glen The trees were selected, taken down The timber cut, stacked up and then Continued... |
