| THE ECHO |
A strange thing happened the other day I could have sworn I heard A voice I recognized as mine Quoting my Mom, word for word! "Eat all your peas!" I told my son "Starving children are everywhere!" Just for a moment there seemed to be An echo in the air! And later, when I told my daughter To make her dollar last... The phrase came back to haunt me Like a ghost from the distant past! My mother saying with a smile "Money doesn't grow on trees!" When I had heard the ice cream truck And run to beg, "A quarter...please??" And the words familiar to every child Heard when they pout and cry The universal mother's answer: "Because I said so...THAT's why!!" And when adolescents drive me nuts The echo's there without a doubt Mother laughs, "I brought you IN this world, I can surely take you OUT!" "Now I lay me down to sleep...." "Put on clean underwear...." "One day your face will stick like that...." "All good children share...." "Call as soon as you arrive...." "Always put your trust in God..." These plus others all delivered With a wise and knowing nod. My mother's long since passed away But I feel her presence still Her wisdom guides me every day And I pray it always will She watches over all of us In Heaven there above Each day my children benefit From the echo of her love All the things she taught me Right from the very start Have combined to make me who I am Each one branded on my heart The wisdom I first learned from her She heard at her mother's knee It echoes down through generations Until it finally came to me So remember when parents pass away Amid the sorrow, grief and fuss? Their legacy is not forgotten It continues on ...through us! Dusty Richardson c 2001 |
