She stormed into the chapel Where patients families came to pray Some knelt, but when they saw her face They quickly moved away… She approached the wooden railing Turned her eyes up to the cross “From all I’ve heard,, God, I would think You’d understand the pain of loss! You took my parents both away And a man whose love was true… Emily’s all that I have left… You CANNOT have her too!” She collapsed into a sobbing heap On the chapel’s tile floor And cried until the tears dried up Until she hadn’t anymore… A steady stream of friends and neighbors Classmates…even Emily’s teacher Tried to make her let her baby go But not one could ever reach her… The staff came by repeatedly Pointing to the dotted line Saying they could turn off life support But she would NEVER sign… So here she sat both day and night So weary she could hardly stand Hadn’t changed her clothes in days Or let go of Emily’s hand Sighing deeply, she closed her eyes Laying down her weary head Close to where their hands were joined Together on the bed… What woke her she could never say Too surprised to say a word Unsure just what could be the cause Of the musical sound she heard Then she realized all at once It was the sound of children laughing! But where could it be coming from She sensed that time was passing Panic-stricken, she struggled up Rising to her feet confused Before her she saw several paths But was undecided which to choose She started down the middle one Toward the child’s laughing voice Which soon grew louder, then she knew She’d made the proper choice Suddenly up ahead she saw A summer garden clear and bright Filled with sunshine, trees and toys And children squealing with delight! Little ponds, a cloudless sky Huge rainbows everywhere… Candy canes and carousels Childhood without a care! A playground filled with little ones Of every race and size Playing happily with a joy That could not be disguised! This whole fantastic garden Was surrounded by a fence Made of towering steel bars That protected innocence… |
