THE GARDEN...PAGE 2

She stormed into the chapel
Where patients families came to pray
Some knelt, but when they saw her face
They quickly moved away…
She approached the wooden railing
Turned her eyes up to the cross
“From all I’ve heard,, God, I would think
You’d understand the pain of loss!

You took my parents both away
And a man whose love was true…
Emily’s all that I have left…
You CANNOT have her too!”
She collapsed into a sobbing heap
On the chapel’s tile floor
And cried until the tears dried up
Until she hadn’t anymore…

A steady stream of friends and neighbors
Classmates…even Emily’s teacher
Tried to make her let her baby go
But not one could ever reach her…
The staff came by repeatedly
Pointing to the dotted line
Saying they could turn off life support
But she would NEVER sign…

So here she sat both day and night
So weary she could hardly stand
Hadn’t changed her clothes in days
Or let go of Emily’s hand
Sighing deeply, she closed her eyes
Laying down her weary head
Close to where their hands were joined
Together on the bed…

What woke her she could never say
Too surprised to say a word
Unsure just what could be the cause
Of the musical sound she heard
Then she realized all at once
It was the sound of children laughing!
But where could it be coming from
She sensed that time was passing

Panic-stricken, she struggled up
Rising to her feet confused
Before her she saw several paths
But was undecided which to choose
She started down the middle one
Toward the child’s laughing voice
Which soon grew louder, then she knew
She’d made the proper choice

Suddenly up ahead she saw
A summer garden clear and bright
Filled with sunshine, trees and toys
And children squealing with delight!
Little ponds, a cloudless sky
Huge rainbows everywhere…
Candy canes and carousels
Childhood without a care!

A playground filled with little ones
Of every race and size
Playing happily with a joy
That could not be disguised!
This whole fantastic garden
Was surrounded by a fence
Made of towering steel bars
That protected innocence…
