THE MESSAGE

The photographs were everywhere
Scattered throughout the home
On the walls and every table
Frames of brass and wood and chrome
The backgrounds were quite different
Shot in many different places
As well as times of day and year
But all showed the same two faces

The man and woman in every one
Looked to be in the kind of love
That is sent to us for certain
From Heaven up above
They’d met while both were still in school
And recognized each other’s heart
Knowing they were meant to be together
Right from the very start

She asked, “How much do you love me?”
He replied, “You’ll never know”
Then he spread his arms both out
As far as they would go
Saying, “I’m not too poetic
But I promise you I’ll care
And I swear I’ll always love you
All the way to there!!”

He looked so silly standing there
With his arms so far apart
To prove the love he felt for her
That it instantly melted her heart!
And that became their mantra
“All the way to there!!”
A secret way for them to show
How much they each would care!

A phrase they never shared with anyone
Although they used it through the years
For each farewell, hello goodbye
A tradition they held dear!
In the third year of their marriage
God blessed them with a child
A little boy with his Daddy’s nose
And Mama’s curls all blonde and wild

Their happiness grew until it seemed
The world took on a golden glow
They years went by as hand in hand
They watched their baby grow
He was his Daddy’s pride and joy
His Mama’s secret treasure
When his 4th birthday came to pass
They both smiled in mutual pleasure

If only they had known that day
Amid the bustle of birthday clatter
That the perfect life they cherished
Was soon to crash and shatter
It was September that same year
On a gloomy, rain-soaked day
The sheriff called and said she must
Get to the hospital right away!!

There’d been an awful highway wreck
Her husband had been involved
The sheriff didn’t know his status
But she must come, that’s why he’d called
Her son was still at daycare
She phoned her mother to come and stay
Later she was unable to recall
Speeding toward the town that day
