THE RAINBOW...PG 2

In the midst of cooking supper
During an early morning walk
On a quick trip to the corner store
Or when a neighbor stopped to talk…
Through whatever she was doing..
She kept one eye on the sky
Forever on the lookout
Without understanding why…

Some thought her quite eccentric
And the neighbors looked askance
When the family gathered on the lawn
To do Mama’s Rainbow dance!!
For every rainbow that appeared
Was greeted with joy and awe..
As if it were the very first
Such spectacle they ever saw!!

The years went by…the babies grew
Before she knew it…they’d be gone
No more bedtime stories or lullabies
Or rainbow parties on the lawn
The children all were in their teens
When came the fateful day
Susannah fell ill and the doctor said
All that’s left to do is pray!

It was cancer…there were treatments
And the family pleaded with her to try!!
But Susannah’s mind was firmly set
Home is where she wished to die!
Besides, chemotherapy was expensive
Not something they could afford
She calmed her family & cheerfully said
“Let’s just leave it with the Lord…”

Three more years they had with her
There were good days and bad
But she smiled through everything
Refusing to be sad…
She reminded them that when she reached
The end of this earthly strife
She’d be able to cross the Rainbow
That led to eternal life!!

When she grew too weak to climb the
stairs
They moved her bed to the living room
So she could watch her beloved rainbows
And see her garden as it bloomed…
One afternoon in early spring
The children visited a family friend
Who resolved to take them fishing
Should the rainshowers ever end…

And end they did, by 2 o’clock
So they gathered bait and poles
Before hiking a half mile up the road
To a favorite swimming hole…
At 3 pm, the youngest girl
Shouted, scrambling to her feet
“Look!! It’s one of Mama’s Rainbows!!”
And they all enjoyed the visual treat!!
