"Well what is it" child,?" asked Sarah Calm down....what is it you're saying?" And when her daughter-in-law’s message sank in Sarah hit her knees…she was praying! "Thank you so much, Father," she whispered For this wonderful thing You have done! For blessing our family with the splendid gift The start of generations to come!" Emily was chattering a mile a minute Sarah said, "I'll come right away! "We'll cook dinner and celebrate! Don't forget to thank-God!! You must pray!" Emily stopped then and hugged herself Then she too got down on her knees She closed her eyes and said "Father? Please bless my new family...oh please! I'm so grateful to You that I found them For through them I got to know You! First Michael became my new husband And now our biggest wish has come true!" She didn’t know how long she knelt there Before the doorbell started to ring Could it be Michael? It must be!!! As she felt her heart start to sing! His mother must have been so excited That she called him at work on the phone To tell him his wife had wonderful news And he should leave right now and rush home! So down the carpeted hallway she flew Anticipating the look on his face... But what she glimpsed through the window out in the yard Made her heart freeze right in its place! A police car was parked in front of the curb Was that an officer coming up the walk? Could that be Sarah stumbling beside him... With her complexion resembling chalk? Emily only remembered quite vaguely Watching Sarah and the policeman come in... The words that he used & what they all meant Were drowned out for deep down within Her heart was banging so loudly Though she thought Sarah gave a small scream Then 'accident,' followed by ---‘ instantly’ The words floated, as if in a dream... Then her father-in-law appeared out of nowhere And somehow, the doctor did too She thought, "We’ll have to call Michael And then all at once...she just knew. Michael would not be coming home this night That's what the policeman had said He was so sorry...the wreck was quite bad Michael and 3 others...all dead. The pain that richocheted inside her Was the worst that she'd ever known Her in-laws tried so hard to handle her grief But they first had to deal with their own! The next few days were only a blur Poor Sarah would not leave her side... Elmily just sat and moved not at all It was almost like she, too, had died. She could not eat…..not one single bite She lay down but never could sleep Conversations just flowed all around her But still she did not speak or weep... |
